If you are in the UK or USA market and think about this question, you need to read this thoroughly.
In the UK !! PRINCE2 or PMP ( read PMBOK ) certification?
Many people have asked me a ubiquitous question if they wish to make a career as a project manager in the UK, what should they opt for since they are trendy worldwide.
PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a dominant worldwide project management framework or methodology. It takes a different approach than the PMI (read PMBOK), but both aim to improve project performance.
First of all, be clear that this question refers to PMI’s PMBOK and OGC’s PRINCE2, as PMP is a certification by PMI. Well, before I address it, you need to understand the market or industry demand and trend for the project management certification in the country of interest, be it UK or USA or any other country for that matter (if, in case you are interested in some other country!). Well, it is not that difficult to answer if you understand your industry demand or trend.
PMBOK and PRINCE2 | difference
let us first see the basic difference between PMBOK and PRINCE2-
First of all, PMBOK is a guide and PRINCE2 a methodology. That PMBOK is a collection of recommendations and standards.
PMBOK consists of the tools and techniques of project management and is a guide telling how things could be done whereas
On the other hand, PRINCE2 is a methodology with a clear process, steps, and templates. If, as a project lead or project manager, you follow PRINCE2, then you are very clear about the next step to follow.
The goal of both PMBOK and PRINCE2 is to improve project performance. PMBOK is well-accepted and popular worldwide and is, without any doubt, the dominating project management approach in North America. PRINCE2, on the other hand, is a de-facto standard in the United Kingdom ( UK). It has a strong presence in Europe and Australia and is expanding its reach constantly, as is with PMBOK.
Hence, if you want to make a career in the UK as a project manager, then PRINCE2 certification is highly recommended. If you want to work in the UK’s public sector, then PRINCE2 certification is almost mandatory. for example
if you go through some of the recruitment advertisements in Uk newspapers or on the websites, you can easily understand that without PRINCE2 certification, you probably won’t be considered at all.
From the Uk point of view, the question is answered. But, Personally, in my opinion, a good project manager should have both the PRINCE2 and PMP certifications. Even if one doesn’t have both the certifications still at least one should be familiar with both.
But if you are targetting the USA, MENA (Gulf region), then PMI-PMP is the preferred one.
If you are unsure about the region you are looking for a job in project management, see the advertisements in that region to understand the demand.
I hope this helps.
